  • History classes tend to focus on lists of dates, names and events, combined with portraits of staid old gentlemen in powdered wigs. This is not history. History is culture, geography, blind luck, joy, tragedy… in short, life. History is the driving force that make us who we are and creates our present time. Moreover, history didn’t happen in some dusty past. History is happening now. It’s shaping our lives daily and the course of nations for decades to come. This is the dynamic history that people need to know. This is the importance of history I want to share and the history that people need to learn to change the world. Matt Dietz currently serving the U.S. Air Force PhD Fellow at the University of North Texas where he studies US Policy, Strategy, and History. He is an instructor pilot with more than 2,500 flight hours. He has traveled around the world and even had to opportunity to live abroad with his family. Through all of this, he has developed a passion for teaching history as an ongoing event, not just a stuffy list of dates and things that happened a long time ago. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
