  • In this lighthearted talk Dominic Walliman gives us four guiding principles for easy science communication and unravels the myth that quantum physics is difficult to understand, it’s all in how it’s explained. Dominic Walliman is a physicist, and award-winning science writer. He received his PhD in quantum device physics from the University of Birmingham and currently works at D-Wave Systems Inc., a quantum computing company in Vancouver. Dominic grew up reading science books and remembers vividly the excitement of discovering the mind-boggling explanations that science gives us about the Universe. If he can pass on this wonder and enjoyment to the next generation, he will consider it a job well done. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

I'm 72 and retired from a fascinating career as a physics rouseabout in Government laboratories after gaining a scraped BSc. Nobody gets that opportunity nowadays. I took courses in quantum mechanics and understand (vaguely these days) how wave and matrix mathematics qualitatively describe simple quantum systems. But I never grasped the process by which such maths delivers quantitative values for decay branching ratios, half-lives, cross sections etc. Complete mystery.

So, there’s this guy and he’s got lost. He drives down the road for quite a while until eventually he finds this old geezer who is sat on a gate. He winds down the window, and he asks the old chap “Hello there, l am trying to get to Redmond, do you know which way it is?

It also helps that the person explaining science has a soothing English accent.

I absolutely loved how he ended that. I'm in grade 12 and studying physics and I'm barely scraping a pass mark but I love science and maths and I have a huge interest in it. I've read articles, and watched videos from general relatively to helicopter physics and I've always been completely encapsulated by all of it
