  • Roles in healthcare have grown increasingly specialized. Often patients don’t understand the differences between the role of nurse and that of doctor. This veteran nurse will empower patients to ask their healthcare providers the right questions through examples in her own story. Associate clinical professor at Texas Woman's University where she has taught over 5,000 students and, through those nurses, has touched the lives of countless patients. She wishes to share her passion for nursing with the TED community. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Well articulated. I've been a nurse 33 years and have seen the gap we fill. Few providers, unfortunately, acknowledge our worth and importance to patient outcomes. Stand up for yourself; you're a nurse.

Great contribution on the specificities of nursing, mainly because many nursing students and nurses still find it difficult to find their place! Nurses need to say more clearly what nursing is, all the knowledge, planning and actions involved in the care!

I am a ICU nurse. I have come to the conclusion that we achieve nothing and produce nothing. We do indeed prolong life of many that would be better off crossed over. We even have a few, so very few survive to live a good life. Its just depressing. What is wrong with death if that person will have a poor quality of life.

Thank you! I am a nursing student and I graduate this year. This was a great way to clarify the role of the nurse. I will be sure to answer those "how" questions when I get into the hospital!

When I/m concerned about the side effects of a certain medication and have discussed the ones that bother me with my doctor, I wish to have further opinions.

Actually the kind and hard working doctors care the patients with their own hands instead of handling over to the nurses. Unfortunately nowadays many doctors are lazy that nurses take over the role.

There used to be a time when nurses got 5 years of training and could do practically all a doctor could do except do surgery. Times have definitely changed.
