  • Through his passion for drawing, artist Charlie Mackesy challenges us to abandon the idea of being good. Instead have the courage to draw, sing, play from your heart, from your emotions. And if we do this together, we build connections, we start communicating, we start belonging, we start to have a community. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

I have never cried so much from a Ted talk. It made me realized that we all repress that inner mess. Instead of embracing it like the child crying out for its mother. May I embrace the mess of a self. May I love the mud because without mud there is no lotus.

I stopped doing art after college because teachers in high schooled college said my art wasn't good. I always loved the classes because I felt free no matter how bad my paintings were...but Those critiques hurt terribly and I stopped doing it the I got out of college. I cried during this talk. I AM going back to doing art, because it's fun for me, to heck with what those who taught be said! And I am just 70!

If I can’t sleep, I listen to Charlie’s stories. He’s such an interesting, laid back guy. His voice is beautiful.

it’s amazing how the idea of the mess really shines through him. Like - he came in late, unprepared and just said what he had to say - a very simple thought but he was wandering his own thoughts during the talk, telling some stories, bringing the dogs, I’ve never seen a ted talk like this before. the talk was an actual mess, and that’s what he came to say and I LOVE that. Also if you haven’t read his book I really really recommend it. It’s healing, kind and heartwarming and truly makes you feel worth something.

Mess is usually more authentic than perfection. 'Art IS therapy' is my mantra; it makes us whole by aknowledging the wonder of life from within.

I think I have just fallen in love with Charlie... what a beautiful heart and mind. I have been trying to write my life story with a 'twist'... thank you Charlie for renewing my 'courage' with HOPE... I will just keep trying, even if it's 'messy'....blessings, Liz

I absolutely love Charlie's talk and in my opinion as a not-very-prolific artist who struggles all the time he has 'nailed' it when he says 'Just make a mess!' (Jane Tredinnick)

I love this talk!! I teach kindergarden and the kids are constantly saying "mine is better than yours." Wow, 5 and 6 years old... already afraid to enjoy marking on paper. I remember a time when I loved drawing so much, it was my existance. Ive feel lost, lately. I want to keep doing this thing I loved so much... I used to draw horses all day, every day. I have a young family now and my spark has been misplaced in all the busy, rushing around. Ill find it again. Its a transition. Just ordered charlies book. Cant wait to read it!

I am so moved by this man’s message! As a person who only ever wanted to be an artist and went through art school...always self-conscious in a perfectionist’s prison, I can be brave and make more messes now! I want to hug him❣️🤗

Gorgeous talk. How brave it is to make a mess - be fearless and daring in that - and of that will come yourself. Maybe even beauty and joy. Thank you, Charlie.
