  • Having reformed a long way since it's inception as an independent country, Prince Manvendra Singh, the first member of the royal family to openly come out as gay, states that India is a country of paradox. In this talk, he expatiates on the struggles faced by the LGBTQA community and how his organization tackles them by empowering them financially and socially. His past experience and interactions in these social awareness campaigns bring out certain facts which show the lack of awareness about the community in our country. In this talk he also expands upon 'Allies', an integral yet lesser talked about part of the community. Manvendra Singh Gohil is the Yuvraaj or Crown Prince of the erstwhile princely State of Rajpipla in Gujarat and the 39th direct descendent of the 650-year-old Gohil Dynasty. He is the first member of a royal family in the world to openly come out as gay in 2006. He is the founder and Chairman of Lakshya Trust, a community-based organization for the gay and transgender community. He is the Ambassador Consultant for AIDS Healthcare Foundation India Cares which is world's largest and oldest non-profit organization working for HIV testing and treatment. He is currently developing a Resource Centre for LGBTQA Community, the first one of its kind in India. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
